So, its your your birthday and you are alone in Kansai… What do you do?

Right. Kobe.
So I did it.

I won’t tell you what I spent, but I will say what I feel obliged to say truthfully, it’s ridiculously good. The chef told me that one guy went vegetarian afterwards because there was just no point anymore. Fair enough.

There is a whole ritual around how to eat what slice in what order (first pure, than with a little bit of salt, then soy sauce and horseraddish, and so on), and all in all there were enough crazy little insignificant delicious sidedishes to leave me completly stuffed and the whole procedure took me about 90 minutes.

And when I told my story, like that I came from Kyoto because it is my birthday and stuff, the chef made some calls – literally, by phone – and then a friend of his from a fancy bakery nearby brought a little package with something inside that he had made himself this very morning. They dimmed the light, and yep, that was that. And it was on the house, of course. Not that this mattered, with the bill involved, but those two guys trying to figure out the English lyrics of ‚Happy Birthday‘, that mattered enourmously! 🙂
